A minor earthquake was felt in the Udadumbara area of Kandy District on the evening of 8 January 2026, according to local reports. The tremor occurred at approximately 5:05 p.m. in the vicinity of Dewahandiya village, registering a magnitude of 2.2 on the Richter scale.
Local residents in several nearby communities, including Mandulla, Kalawala, Mahawala, Udapitawala, and Themandiya, reported feeling the ground shake briefly, though the movement was light and short-lived.
Officials from the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) confirmed the seismic activity and emphasized that such minor tremors are not uncommon in the central hills region of Sri Lanka and pose no immediate threat to people or property. GSMB and the Seismic Data and Tsunami Center clarified that no damage or injuries have been reported following the event.
Authorities have urged the public not to panic, noting that tremors below magnitude 3.0 typically do not cause structural damage.
Experts continue to monitor seismic activity across the island as part of ongoing national safety efforts, but there are currently no warnings or alerts connected to this minor quake.
