How to Reach Meemure
Reaching Meemure is still an adventure, but the route is now accessible by any type of vehicle under normal conditions. The road from Hunnasgiriya through Loolwatte has improved over time, allowing cars, vans, and motorbikes to reach the village.
However, at present, travel restrictions are in place due to the spread of a local plant disease known as “Ditwa.” To prevent further environmental damage and contamination, vehicle access is temporarily limited, and visitors are currently allowed to enter Meemure only by bicycles or three-wheelers. These measures are being enforced to protect the surrounding ecosystem and village farmlands.
Despite these restrictions, the journey remains scenic and rewarding, passing through forests, streams, and mountain landscapes that highlight Meemure’s untouched beauty.
Lakegala – The Legendary Rock of Lanka
Lakegala Mountain rises to approximately 1,300 meters above sea level, dominating the skyline above Meemure. Its sharp, triangular rock face makes it one of Sri Lanka’s most distinctive natural landmarks.
According to local legend, Lakegala is linked to King Ravana and believed to be part of his ancient kingdom. Folklore suggests it served as a launch point for the mythical Dandu Monara, adding a mystical layer to the mountain’s identity.
Lakegala Hiking and Adventure
Climbing Lakegala is considered one of the most challenging hikes in Sri Lanka. The route involves river crossings, dense jungle trails, and steep ascents. The final climb requires technical climbing skills and should only be attempted with experienced guides.
